General TNI (Ret) Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was born in Pacitan on 9
September 1949. Having graduated from the Military Academy in 1973, his
military career and rank rose until he became a four-star general in 2000. In
1991, he received his Master of Arts in Management from Webster University, the
United States. He earned a Doctorate Degree in Agricultural Economics from
Bogor Institute of Agriculture in 2004.

He retired early from the military service—five years ahead of his official
retirement—when he was appointed as Minister of Mining and Energy. For his
outstanding service, General (Ret) Dr. Yudhoyono was decorated with 24 medals
and awards, including the UNPKF Medal, Bintang Dharma, Bintang Maha Putra
Utama, and Bintang Republik Indonesia Adipurna, the highest national medal.

In the government, Dr. Yudhoyono held various important positions. He served as
Minister of Mining and Energy (1999-2000), and Coordinating Minister for
Political, Social, and Security Affairs in the National Unity Cabinet under
President Abdurrahman Wahid (2000-2001). He again served as Coordinating
Minister for Political and Security Affairs in the Gotong Royong Cabinet under
President Megawati Soekarnoputri (2001-2004).

Upon his resignation from the Gotong Royong Cabinet, Dr. Yudhoyono decided to
run in the Presidential elections. He and his running mate, Mr. Jusuf Kalla,
won the first-ever direct Presidential Elections in the country. Dr. Yudhoyono
is currently serving as the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia.

As an intellectual and prolific writer, General (Ret) Yudhoyono has authored a
number of books and articles. Among his academic writings are: Revitalisasi
Ekonomi Indonesia: Bisnis, Politik dan Good Governance (Revitalization of the
Indonesian Economy: Business, Politics and Good Governance) published by
Brighten Institute in 2002; Mengatasi Krisis-Menyelamatkan Reformasi (Coping
with the Crisis – Securing the Reform), published by Puskap in 1999. As an
eloquent speaker, Dr. Yudhoyono is also a keen poet. Taman Kehidupan (Garden of
Life) is his anthology published in 2004.
